Subject: Hey Guys
Cool site...thank you for doing this.
I'm a former Calgree punk, now writing a book about punque rocque for
Random House. (Met with John Lydon today in Toronto - what an arsehole, but
that's a story for another day.) Looking for ideas, help, etc. about
mostly Old School stuff and people. Particularly interested in locating
Gerry Useless.
Feel free to circulate my email. I'd love to hear from people about their
ideas and suggestions.
Best
Warren Kinsella

Thanks Warren,
I'll let people know about the email & start working on a commentary for the
web site about the Hot Nasties off of the bio & info on your site.
A friend of mine mentioned that Gerry Useless is currently working for ________. Since you are
an old Calgary punk, you may know this friend of mine, Ron Rooster.
Our site is getting quite a bit of traffic lately & email from old school
people who want to keep alive the people and the memories of the past. I can
put up something on the site mentioning your current project & and call for
help.
The site is still in its early phases, after the band database is set up, we
are planning on going into a research & writing phase. Currently we are
working on collecting the contacts, and finding people who want to
contribute to the site. With all of us who are working on the site stuck
with day jobs, we know this project is a bit big for just a few people.
The whole idea of the site came from having read books such as American
Hardcore and realizing that outside of Smash the State from Frank Manley,
there wasn't much on the Canadian punk scene. Neither the music or the
social scene that was behind it were documented from a social aspect.
Instead of the book idea, Steve who was a first gen punk out in St.
Catharine's Ontario, Ron Rooster an early first generation Calgarian and
Vancouver punk, Neil MacCalder a second generation punk from Calgary, and
me - Nicole McCreary a late 2nd generation punk, thought a web site would be
the best forum.
More than once, we were sitting at the pub reminiscing about things from our
punk days and despite the differences in our ages and when we were active in
the scene, there was a shared cultural experience.
There is quite a bit I want to write on the subject of living in the state
of anarchy - and we thought correctly that there are many people who like
ourselves don't want the past to be forgotten.
Punk made us all who we are today - and what we want to capture on the
website is the essence of the early punk movement in Canada. There are
aspects of Americanism and the American punk scene that influenced the
Canadian scene, as well as aspects of the British scene that influenced us
as well. How many people with fake British accents quoting Johnny Rotten
were there? We didn't have Reagan or Thatcher to oppress us, but there was
still a high number of unemployed and disenfranchised youth.
As well for many punks, myself included, it was an identity change. The
person who I was as a child and teenager was shy, introverted and socially
awkward. When I found punk, I found a way to make not fitting in a positive
thing. While I was enjoying the social aspect of the punk scene, right under
my nose I was influenced by the political aspects of punk.
Sure, much of the time it seemed the punk scene was about drinking beer and
listening to loud music and occasionally making your own loud music but
inside the scene was the ideas and politics that shaped who I am today.
I am glad to hear you are working on a book on punk, personally I would like
to see a book documenting the societal aspect of the punk scene, and the
influence punk and punk music had on culture, society, and activism from the
Canadian perspective.
Thanks for the posters & album covers - if you have anything else you'd like
to contribute or if there is anything we can do to help you with your book,
let us know.
I've Cc:ed Ron, Neil, and Steve on this email, and they can take a look and
pass this email to friends if they would like.
I take care of most of the mail to the webmaster address, but my personal
email address is nicole@punkhistorycanada.ca
Thanks,
Nicole McCreary.
